How Does a DUI Impact your Driver's License?

While it is never the goal to find yourself in a situation where you are arrested for driving under the influence or driving while intoxicated, it does happen to people of all walks of life. Because of this, you should be aware of how a DUI or DWI will impact you. The State of Washington and the court system can apply several different types of penalties to drivers with DUI infractions. Some may include jail time, fines, traffic school and possibly revoking of driving privileges.

If you are charged with a DUI you may have to adjust to life without the ability to drive. In Washington State, you can lose your license anywhere from 90 days up to two years. This penalty is typically implemented 60 days after initial arrest or notice of suspension through the court system.

After arrest or suspension notice you have 20 days to request an administrative hearing. This administrative hearing can cost about $375 and is nonrefundable. The hearing is a chance for you to advocate about your situation in the hopes of getting your DUI charge reduced or dismissed. This option can be beneficial because it could eliminate the impact on your record and ability to drive. This administrative hearing is through the Washington Department of Licensing and is a separate process from the court system.

Again, we hope people are able to drive safely and do not need to think about what a DUI means for their life. However, if convicted you need to be aware of the process so that you can advocate for yourself through the legal system. After your term of license revocation is complete you can petition to get your driver’s license reinstated. This process typically includes but not limited to, a treatment program, Washington Department of licensing application, payment of reinstatement fees and any new license fees.

In conclusion, it is important to know all of the facts regarding the conviction process for a driving under the influence charge and what it looks like to have your license revoked and reinstated. The arrest or conviction can typically result in a loss of driver's license. There are specific steps needed to be completed in order to get it active again and be in good standing with the Department of Licensing in Washington State.
